Orthognathic Surgery
Braces are first placed on your teeth to put them in proper alignment before surgery. The jaw surgery is done under general anesthesia (in a hospital of your choice). After you recover and the post-surgical swelling subsides, the results of your orthognathic surgery can be rather dramatic. It is important for the patient and loved ones to be psychologically prepared for this sudden, visible improvement. Please consult with us to understand better your expectations, the functional and aesthetic possibilities and limitations pertaining to orthognathic surgery.
Orthognathic surgery is needed if your jaw bone(s) as well as teeth need to be corrected. This is done to improve function (chewing/ speech/ breathing), aesthetics and stability of your bite/ occlusion.
What are common problems that can be managed with Orthognathic Surgery?
Common problems include:
Flat upper jaw
Excessive show of gums (i.e. a gummy smile)
Overall elongation of the face
Facial asymmetry
Long lower jaw
Short lower jaw
Obstructive sleep apnoea
Jaw deformities resulting from trauma
Genioplasty (Chin Reduction)
Genioplasty is a type of surgery done on the chin. Both plastic surgeons and maxillofacial surgeons (surgeons who work on the mouth and jaw) can perform this type of surgery.
Genioplasty is most frequently a cosmetic surgery, meaning people choose to have it for looks and not because of a medical problem. For this reason, it’s often not covered by insurance.
